KUALA LUMPUR, April 13 — The creators of Highway To Somewhere have responded to criticism from Malaysian groups, stressing that the series was never intended to portray Malaysia as a scam hub.
Screenwriter Ang Eng Tee said the storyline was inspired by real-world reports of scam syndicates affecting multiple countries, including Singapore and Malaysia.

And aimed to raise awareness rather than target any specific nation. The 20-episode drama, produced by Mediacorp, drew backlash from organisations such as the Malaysia Ma-Zhong Tradition Culture Association.
Which argued that the depiction could harm Malaysia’s image and tourism. Director Oh Liang Cai added that the scam subplot represents only a small portion of the narrative.

With the series also highlighting Malaysia’s scenic locations and culture. He urged viewers to assess the show as a whole, noting that it ultimately portrays law enforcement bringing criminals to justice while promoting vigilance against global scam threats.
