GEORGE TOWN, April 15 – YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State Executive Councillor (EXCO) for Tourism and Creative Economy, said recent flight cancellations and schedule changes reflect a broader global trend driven by rising fuel costs and ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
He noted that airlines are adjusting frequencies, consolidating flights, or cancelling services based on passenger demand and operational costs.
Adding that such measures are common during periods of uncertainty. Wong shared that he was personally affected by a cancelled flight, underscoring the widespread nature of the issue.
He advised travellers to take precautionary steps, including purchasing travel insurance, booking through reliable agents, and opting for flexible hotel reservations.
Wong added that Malaysia will shift its tourism focus towards regional and domestic markets as arrivals from Europe and the Middle East are expected to decline.
