PUTRAJAYA, April 18 — Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has opened 36 investigation papers over the spread of fake news related to the global energy crisis.

Authorities have called 22 individuals nationwide to record statements, while six cases have already been referred to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.

The investigations are being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries penalties of up to RM500,000 in fines or two years’ imprisonment.
