GEORGE TOWN, April 18 — Rising global oil prices are driving up plastic production costs, prompting the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) to call for an urgent shift away from single-use plastics.
As petroleum-based materials become more expensive, businesses and consumers are urged to rethink reliance on disposable packaging.
CAP stressed that traders should phase out plastic bags and containers, while consumers adopt reusable alternatives.
The group also cautioned against overreliance on biodegradable plastics, citing environmental limitations. It urged stronger policies, incentives.
And public awareness to accelerate sustainable practices and reduce long-term environmental and economic risks.
