GEORGE TOWN, April 21 — About 10,000 water consumers in Seberang Perai Utara and Seberang Perai Tengah will not face any scheduled water supply interruption.
As the final connection works for the Third Sungai Perai River-Crossing Pipeline (3rd SP-RCP) are carried out from April 24 to 26, 2026.
The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) will deploy advanced “hot tapping” and “line stopping” technology to complete the works without shutting down the existing 975mm pipeline.
PBAPP chief executive officer Pathmanathan K. said the method allows the project to proceed without disrupting supply to key areas including Mak Mandin, Bagan Lalang, Sungai Dua, and the Perai Industrial Area.
Although the technology costs about RM600,000 compared to RM80,000 for conventional works, he said it avoids a 48 to 72-hour water disruption for households and industries.
This marks the second time such technology is used in Penang, following its successful deployment earlier this year, and aligns with state efforts to improve infrastructure delivery while minimising public inconvenience.
