PETALING JAYA, April 21 – The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) will study the possibility of postponing the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma).

After Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah suggested delaying the event amid global economic pressures and ongoing infrastructure works.

Minister Dr Taufiq Johari said discussions will be held with the Selangor government, as the host state, and a special meeting of the Sukma Supreme Committee will be convened.

Involving all state representatives, the National Sports Council, and the Olympic Council of Malaysia to evaluate the proposal.

Sultan Sharafuddin expressed concern that hosting the Games from August 15 to 24 would involve significant costs, especially during the current global energy crisis.

And while the Shah Alam Stadium remains under reconstruction. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the state would defer to the federal ministry and the Supreme Committee.

Stressing that athlete preparation for the 2027 SEA Games must not be disrupted. He added that financial implications, including sunk costs and development progress.

Will be carefully reviewed before any decision is made. Analysts have also warned that Sukma 2026 costs could rise by 20 to 30 per cent for participating contingents.

Due to higher logistics and travel expenses, particularly for Sabah and Sarawak. While some experts argue postponement could affect athlete development.

Others say it may be justified given current cost-of-living pressures and national priorities. The final decision is expected after consultations among stakeholders.
