KUALA LUMPUR, April 22 — Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has warned that the proposed separation of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor roles.

Could create one of the most powerful positions in Malaysia if not properly checked. Speaking at a forum organised by the Malaysian Bar.

He said the new Public Prosecutor could rank among the top five most influential offices in the country, making its appointment process highly sensitive.

He stressed that power over appointments must be decentralised to prevent political influence and safeguard prosecutorial independence.

Syed Saddiq cautioned that without strong checks and balances, the reform could become a “fake reform” enabling misuse of authority.

He also highlighted concerns that concentrated power in the executive could undermine transparency, calling for broader oversight mechanisms in the proposed law currently reviewed by Parliament.
