PETALING JAYA, April 27 — The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has warned that counterfeit and unregistered medicines are becoming a serious public health threat in Malaysia.
Its president, Dr R Thirunavukarasu, said authorities conducted over 4,000 raids between 2023 and 2025, seizing more than RM108 million worth of illegal health products.
However, he noted the actual scale could be higher due to growing online sales. Citing data from the World Health Organization, he said fake medical products account for up to 10% globally.
With higher rates in parts of Asia. Concerns now extend beyond supplements to include unregistered vaccines, posing significant risks.
MMA urged stronger authentication tools, such as tax stamps, and advised patients to purchase medicines only from licensed pharmacies and healthcare providers.
