GEORGE TOWN, April 28 — Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) has successfully completed its Sungai Perai River-Crossing Pipelines (SP-RCP) programme.

Replacing all aging underwater pipelines to prevent future leaks and bursts. The RM16.2 million initiative involved three projects completed between April 2025 and April 2026.

Addressing vulnerabilities in pipelines installed in the 1990s that previously caused major disruptions affecting up to 200,000 consumers.

PBAPP CEO Dato’ Ir. Pathmanathan K. said the upgrades ensure more stable water supply and improved pressure for about 465,000 consumers across Penang.

The final phase was completed without disruption using advanced “hot tapping” and “line-stopping” technologies, avoiding outages for thousands of users, including industrial areas.

The new pipelines are expected to last over 25 years and allow easier maintenance, marking a long-term solution to water supply reliability in the state.
