KUALA LUMPUR, May 1 — Malaysia is grappling with a growing “double burden” of malnutrition, where children are increasingly overweight yet undernourished.
According to insights shared by Professor Ts. Dr Chong Li Choo of Taylor’s University. Data from the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2024 shows that 24.3% of toddlers are stunted.
While over 30% of school-age children are overweight or obese, highlighting a worrying national trend. Chong emphasised that the issue goes beyond parental choice.
Pointing to rising living costs, time constraints, and reliance on convenient but low-nutrient foods. She called for systemic solutions.
Including improved school nutrition education, industry innovation in healthier convenience foods, and stronger policies to curb unhealthy food marketing,
Urging stakeholders to ensure accessible, nutritious options for Malaysia’s future generation.
