KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 — Police have arrested a local man in Bukit Mertajam over a social media post allegedly insulting Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
M. Kumar, director of the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department, said the suspect in his 30s was detained at 7.10pm yesterday.
Following investigations into a Facebook account believed to have uploaded the offensive content on May 2.
Authorities seized two Samsung mobile phones and SIM cards during the operation, which involved the police, Penang Police Contingent Headquarters and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
The case is being investigated under the Sedition Act 1948, Penal Code and Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, with 12 police reports lodged nationwide.
Police said a remand application will be made and warned against misuse of social media, especially on sensitive 3R issues.
