KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 — The Government of Malaysia has confirmed the official public holiday arrangements for 2026, involving Hari Wesak on May 31 (Sunday) and the Birthday of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on June 1 (Monday).
The King’s Birthday is classified as a mandatory paid public holiday for private sector employees in Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan and cannot be substituted with another date.
Under the arrangement, employers who observe Sunday as a weekly rest day and opt to include Wesak as a paid holiday must grant June 1 as a non-replaceable public holiday.
And provide June 2 as a substitute holiday for Wesak, which falls on a rest day. However, this substitute day may be replaced with another agreed date between employers and employees.
The government also reminded that employees earning RM4,000 and below are entitled to additional pay rates if required to work on public holidays, in line with provisions under the Employment Act 1955.
