KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that the government is reviewing RON95 fuel subsidies for higher-income groups.
But stressed that the upper middle-income segment should not be unfairly affected by the proposed changes.
Anwar said the study is being carried out by the National Economic Action Council’s crisis management task force led by Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican.
Discussions are ongoing on whether the subsidy rationalisation should involve the T5, T10, T15 or T20 income groups.
He said the government has agreed in principle to the proposal but wants a system that is practical and easy to implement.
Malaysia currently sells subsidised RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre, among the lowest fuel prices globally.
Economists estimate the move could save Putrajaya up to RM1.5 billion monthly, with savings potentially redirected to support lower- and middle-income households.
