GEORGE TOWN, May 11 – The Penang State Government has clarified that the constitutional two-term limit for the Chief Minister does not necessarily mean a fixed 10-year period.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the interpretation is based on cumulative years served across two terms.
Which may total less than 10 years if the State Legislative Assembly is dissolved earlier, but cannot exceed 10 years overall.
Responding to a question raised by Machang Bubuk assemblyman Lee Khai Loon during the Penang State Legislative Assembly sitting.
Chow said Article 7 Clause 2(a) of the Penang Constitution states that an individual cannot hold the Chief Minister post for more than two terms.
He added that the state government currently has no plans to amend the provision from “two terms” to a fixed “10 years” limit.
