GEORGE TOWN, May 12 – Chow Kon Yeow said the Penang government will continue implementing projects under the Water Contingency Plan 2030 despite rising operational and construction costs caused by global economic uncertainties.
He said projects managed by Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBAPP) are essential to ensuring long-term water supply stability in the state.
Speaking at the state legislative assembly, Chow said sukuk financing had already been secured for the projects which are currently at various stages including construction, consultancy and land acquisition.
He added that Penang Development Corporation (PDC) has postponed several projects for at least six months and agreed in principle to share increased costs with contractors.
Chow also noted that higher diesel prices are increasing operational expenses for local councils, with Seberang Perai City Council expected to bear an additional RM5 million in costs.
