GEORGE TOWN, May 13 – Air Putih assemblyman Lim Guan Eng has called for the postponement of the proposed land tax and water tariff increase of 20 sen per cubic metre scheduled for 1 July 2026.
Citing ongoing global economic uncertainties. He said rising costs, supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions have significantly affected industries and household living costs.
He urged the Penang state government to delay the hikes for at least one year or until global conditions stabilise.
Stressing that the projected additional revenue of RM70 million is not worth the burden on the public. Lim also raised concerns over broader state financial management.
Calling for more transparent governance and fairer allocation of development funds while prioritising rakyat welfare during the crisis period.
