GEORGE TOWN, May 15- The Penang state government says heritage sites, including George Town’s UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Continue to play a key role in boosting tourism while requiring strict management to preserve authenticity and historical value.
Authorities stressed that comprehensive Heritage Management Plans and Special Area Plans are essential to ensure sustainable development without compromising cultural integrity.
The government acknowledged challenges such as abandoned heritage buildings, many due to ownership disputes, inheritance issues and high restoration costs.
Through George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI), 11 buildings have been identified as dangerous and 120 as dilapidated.
With ongoing repair incentives supporting restoration works. Officials also assured that development in sensitive heritage zones.
Will be guided by strong governance, expert reviews, continuous training and cultural education to safeguard Penang’s historical identity while supporting modern growth.
