DUNGUN, May 19 — The government has reinforced its commitment to strengthening Malaysia’s energy resilience with the launch of the Santong Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Dungun, Terengganu.

Officially launched by Fadillah Yusof, the 100MW/400MWh project developed by  Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) is among the country’s earliest large-scale utility battery storage systems.

The Santong BESS serves as a large-scale “power bank,” storing excess electricity and releasing it when needed to stabilise the national grid and support wider renewable energy integration.

As Malaysia aims for 70% renewable installed capacity by 2050, the project is expected to improve energy reliability.

Support green technology growth and strengthen the country’s transition towards a low-carbon economy while creating opportunities in smart grid and energy technology sectors.
