KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 — The Energy Commission has introduced new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Safety Guidelines under the Electricity Supply Act 1990.
To strengthen safety standards for battery storage installations across Malaysia. The guidelines cover lithium-ion battery systems used in residential, commercial and utility-scale energy storage projects.
Outlining requirements for installation, operation, maintenance and hazard mitigation. Key measures include mandatory anti-islanding protection, thermal runaway safeguards.
Fire safety systems, testing procedures, protective equipment and compliance with international IEC and UL standards.
The guidelines also require all BESS-related work to be handled by registered electrical contractors and competent personnel.
While ensuring installations comply with local authority and fire safety regulations.
