GEORGE TOWN, May 26 — Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said financial difficulties faced by the project concessionaire caused delays in the completion of the Air Itam–Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway project.
Chow said the RM851 million, 6km highway project has been granted an extension until April 2027 to complete construction works.
The project, undertaken by Consortium Zenith Construction under the Penang Infrastructure Corporation, physically began in 2021 after the contract was awarded in 2020.
Chow dismissed claims linking the delay to the Covid-19 pandemic, saying the concessionaire’s financial challenges were the main issue behind the project’s slow progress.
