GEORGE TOWN, May 26 — The Ayer Itam–Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway project in Penang has been delayed again with full completion now expected by April 2027.
Following approval and technical evaluation setbacks involving Section 6 of the project. The 6km toll-free bypass project, first announced in 2014 and launched in 2016.
Is designed to reduce travel time between Bandar Baru Air Itam and the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway from 40 minutes to under 10 minutes.
The RM851 million project is currently about 87 per cent complete and includes elevated viaducts, tunnels and three major interchanges.
Critics have questioned the pace of progress, highlighting the long construction timeline despite the project’s importance in easing congestion.
Affecting more than 300,000 residents in Ayer Itam and Paya Terubong.
