GEORGE TOWN, May 28 — Wong Hon Wai announced that the Penang government has officially gazetted 50 cultural heritage items under the Penang State Heritage Enactment 2011.
Marking the first major implementation of the law since it was passed 15 years ago. The gazetted list includes 15 heritage sites, seven intangible cultural heritage elements and 28 heritage food items.
Among the recognised sites are Fort Cornwallis, Kapitan Keling Mosque and St. George’s Church. Intangible heritage items include Penang Hokkien dialect, Thaipusam and Chingay processions.
While heritage foods include nasi kandar, asam laksa, char kuey teow and cendol. Wong said the move strengthens institutional protection for Penang’s multicultural heritage.
While paving the way for future national and UNESCO cultural heritage recognition.
