ISKANDAR PUTERI, May 29 — The Johor State Legislative Assembly has approved an amendment to the state constitution allowing the appointment of five unelected assemblymen.
Following a two-thirds majority vote involving 40 out of 56 assemblymen today. Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the move aims to strengthen the legislative institution.
By bringing in individuals with expertise in areas such as economy, education, technology, youth, women and civil society.
He added that the appointments would help ensure broader representation in policymaking and improve the quality of debates in the state assembly.
The amendment increases Johor’s total assembly seats from 56 to 61, following similar practices adopted in Pahang, Terengganu and Sabah.
