PETALING JAYA, May 29 — Nurhisham Hussein believes nuclear energy is the most viable long-term solution for Peninsular Malaysia’s growing electricity needs.
Arguing that solar power cannot provide stable baseload generation while the peninsula lacks the hydropower resources available in Sabah and Sarawak.
Speaking on a podcast, Nurhisham said adopting nuclear power would require major policy reforms, public education and compliance with international agreements.
Including waste management frameworks. He also highlighted the potential of the proposed ASEAN Power Grid to import renewable hydropower from neighbouring countries.
The comments come as Malaysia studies nuclear energy under the 13th Malaysia Plan and faces rising electricity demand.
Driven by economic growth, data centres and increased domestic natural gas usage, while continuing efforts to reduce dependence on coal-fired power generation.
