GEORGE TOWN, May 31 – Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has expressed concern over worsening pollution in Sungai Juru.
Which is affecting about 100 cockle breeders and fishermen in Kampung Kuala Juru, Seberang Perai Tengah.
The pollution, believed to be caused by industrial waste and shrimp farm discharge, has reportedly reduced more than 50 per cent of their income following the death of cockles and fish in the river.
Kuala Juru fishermen’s head Wahid Othman said the situation has become serious over the past year, with river water turning black and emitting foul odours due to suspected chemical waste disposal.
CAP urged the Penang government, the Department of Environment, Department of Irrigation and Drainage, Fisheries Department.
And local authorities to take immediate action, including closing polluted drainage outlets and assisting affected fishermen and breeders.
