GEORGE TOWN, May 31 — A fire broke out at the former Odeon Cinema building along Penang Road last night, causing significant damage to one of Penang’s most recognisable heritage landmarks.
Firefighters received an emergency call at about 8.50pm and rushed to the scene, where the building, now operating as the Midnight Black entertainment outlet, was engulfed in flames.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow confirmed that one fatality was reported in the incident and extended condolences to the victim’s family.
Authorities said firefighters managed to contain the blaze before it spread to nearby properties. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are still under investigation.
The historic building served as a cinema for decades before closing in 2014 and later being converted into entertainment and nightlife venues.
