GEORGE TOWN, May 31 — A man believed to be a Myanmar national died while attempting to escape a fire that broke out at the former Odeon Cinema building along Penang Road on Saturday night.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department director Mohamad Shoki Hamzah said the victim’s body was found near an exit after firefighters extinguished the blaze at about 11.15pm.
The fire damaged approximately 50 per cent of the two-storey building, which currently houses the Midnight Black entertainment outlet.
And was reportedly undergoing renovation when the incident occurred. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow expressed condolences to the victim’s family.
Praised firefighters for preventing the blaze from spreading to nearby heritage buildings. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
