JOHOR BAHRU, June 1 — Johor is heading to the polls after the state legislative assembly was officially dissolved today, paving the way for the 16th Johor state election to be held within the next 60 days.
Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the dissolution was approved by the Johor Regent, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, ending weeks of speculation over the timing of the state election.
The announcement was made at the Menteri Besar’s official residence in Saujana. In the 2022 state election, Barisan Nasional secured 40 of the 56 seats, while Pakatan Harapan won 12 seats.
Perikatan Nasional and Muda secured the remaining four seats. With the dissolution of the state assembly, Johor is now set for a fresh electoral contest.
That is expected to be among Malaysia’s most closely watched political battles ahead of the next general election.
Onn Hafiz said the move would allow Johoreans to choose a new state government and provide a renewed mandate to continue driving the state’s development agenda.
