GEORGE TOWN, June 1 — Penang’s tourism sector enjoyed a strong boost during the long holiday weekend, with hotel occupancy rates in major tourist areas reaching between 90 and 100 per cent.
As visitors flocked to the state for Wesak Day and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s Birthday celebrations.
State tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said popular attractions including Penang Hill, Batu Ferringhi and the UNESCO World Heritage Site in George Town recorded large crowds.
Malaysian Association of Hotels Penang chairman Tony Goh said several hotels in George Town and Batu Ferringhi were fully booked, with domestic tourists making up the majority of visitors.
Popular food outlets and durian destinations in Balik Pulau also saw increased patronage.
