GEORGE TOWN, June 3 — Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has dismissed the likelihood of Penang holding its next state election concurrently with the 16th General Election (GE16).
Saying the state still has about two-and-a-half years remaining in its current term. Chow said the electoral calendar had already been disrupted.
After Penang and five other states held their elections in August 2023, several months after GE15 in November 2022.
He argued that dissolving the state assembly early solely to align with parliamentary elections would be unfair to voters who had given the current administration a mandate to govern.
While some political leaders have proposed synchronising state and federal elections to reduce costs, Chow said it would be difficult to achieve under current circumstances.
He added that Penang would assist in the upcoming Johor state election if requested by the party leadership.
