GEORGE TOWN, June 4 — The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has ordered a coffee shop along Jalan Terengganu to remove stickers designating tables for halal and non-halal food.
Following public complaints and widespread discussion on social media.MBPP Mayor Rajendran Anthony said the eatery is privately operated and that such practices have never been part of MBPP policy.
Public health committee alternate chairman Tan Soo Siang said the issue arose after a burger stall placed the labels without obtaining approval from the council.
She added that the stall does not possess halal certification and therefore has no authority to designate seating areas.
MBPP warned that such measures could create unnecessary racial and religious sensitivities and pledged continued monitoring to prevent similar incidents.
