KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — Energy Commission has issued a directive enforcing the adoption of new electrical cable colour codes based on the IEC 60445 international standard for electrical installations nationwide.

Under the directive, existing and new colour codes may be used for new installations, upgrades and modifications until December 31, 2028.

From January 1, 2029, all electrical wiring must comply with the new standards, with phase conductors changing from red, yellow and blue to brown, black and grey.

While neutral cables will change from black to blue. The commission said clear labelling is mandatory where old and new cable colours coexist. Non-compliance may result in fines of up to RM200,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.
