GEORGE TOWN, June 17 — The Penang government has reiterated its support for federal policies on managing refugees and asylum seekers while prioritising public safety and social stability.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said immigration control, refugee recognition and border enforcement remain under federal jurisdiction.
He noted that an estimated 20,022 refugees and asylum seekers were in Penang as of August 2023. Chow said the state supports the Refugee Registration Document mechanism.
Introduced under federal guidelines to ensure better monitoring and management. He stressed that Penang will not tolerate criminal activities, human trafficking.
Document abuse or immigration violations, and will continue cooperating with federal authorities on enforcement efforts.
