BUTTERWORTH, June 24 — Penang police have crippled a major drug trafficking syndicate following two raids in Butterworth that resulted in the seizure of narcotics valued at RM9.7 million and the arrest of two local suspects.
Penang police chief Dennis Lim Kwang Keng said officers from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department seized large quantities of MDMA, ketamine, Erimin 5, ecstasy pills and methamphetamine vape cartridges.
Investigations indicate the syndicate had been operating since January 2026. Police estimated the drugs could have affected 221,649 users.
Both suspects tested negative for drug use but were found to have previous criminal records. They are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction.
