KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 — Road safety activist Shahrim Tamrin has warned that Malaysia’s goal of introducing Level 3 autonomous driving by 2030 risks outpacing existing laws.
In a policy paper submitted to government agencies, Shahrim said the Road Transport Act 1987 does not address situations where a self-driving system is controlling a vehicle.
He urged authorities to amend road laws, mandate data-recording “black boxes”, adopt international safety standards and clarify liability between drivers and manufacturers.
While supporting autonomous technology’s potential to reduce road deaths, he stressed that legal safeguards must be established before deployment on Malaysian roads.
