  • Bill passed after debate in Dewan Rakyat.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 — Transport Minister Anthony Loke has defended proposed amendments to the Road Transport Act, saying the RM500 compound rate represents a maximum penalty.

And will not be imposed uniformly on all offences. Loke said enforcement authorities retain discretion based on the seriousness of each case, while early payment discounts will continue.

He also clarified that the new Section 42A targets illegal racing, challenge-based speeding and dangerous speed trials rather than ordinary overtaking or isolated speeding incidents.

The minister stressed that the amendments are designed to improve compliance, enhance road safety, digitise enforcement and curb reckless driving, not to generate government revenue.
