KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 — Malaysia recorded 66,204 online scam cases this year, an 87 per cent increase compared with the previous year, according to Inspector-General of Police Mohd Khalid Ismail.
Speaking at the launch of the Combat Scam campaign, Khalid said victims lost RM2.97 billion last year, an increase of RM1.40 billion from 2024.
Phone scams remained the most common offence with 28,388 reported cases, while fake investment schemes caused the highest losses at RM1.47 billion.
He said scammers are increasingly exploiting digital platforms and advanced technology to target victims. Khalid urged the public to remain vigilant.
