ALOR SETAR, June 29 — The amended Fisheries Act 2025 has officially come into force, strengthening enforcement against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing while enhancing protection of Malaysia’s marine resources.
Director-General of Fisheries Adnan Hussain said the law reflects Malaysia’s commitment to safeguarding fisheries sustainability and national food security.
Under the amendments, general penalties have increased from RM20,000 to RM100,000, while offences involving explosives, poisons, electric currents.
And prohibited fishing methods can attract fines of up to RM250,000 and imprisonment of up to five years. Certain offences affecting marine parks and protected ecosystems now carry penalties of up to RM1 million.
