SEREMBAN, July 20 — The campaign for the 16th Negeri Sembilan state election officially began following nomination proceedings at eight centres across the state.
Setting the stage for two weeks of intense campaigning before polling day on Aug 1. Pakatan Harapan is contesting all 36 state seats.
While Barisan Nasional is fielding 25 candidates and Perikatan Nasional 11 under an electoral arrangement that avoids direct clashes between the two coalitions.
PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said PN and BN would campaign for each other’s candidates throughout the election.
Among the most closely watched contests, BN deputy chairman and Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan is defending Rantau against PH candidate Dr Azizul Hakim Mahdi.
DAP secretary-general and Transport Minister Anthony Loke faces MCA candidate Siow Kong Choon in a straight fight for Chennah.
While Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun is contesting the Umno stronghold of Linggi against BN and Bersatu candidates.
Several other seats will see multi-cornered contests involving Bersatu, independent candidates and smaller parties. A total of 889,490 voters are eligible to vote, with early polling scheduled for July 28.
