KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 — The Ministry of Finance (MoF) said the number of active Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL)users in Malaysia reached eight million in the first quarter of 2026.
With outstanding balances totalling RM5.3 billion. MoF said overdue payments stood at RM181 million, or 3.4% of total BNPL balances.
While BNPL debt accounted for just 0.3% of Malaysia’s household debt. The ministry added that Consumer Credit Commission (SKP) licensing requirements for BNPL providers.
Took effect on June 1, with existing operators required to apply for licences by November 30, 2026.
