WASHINGTON, July 24 — The United States has imposed new tariffs of 10% to 12.5% on imports from 60 trading partners, including Malaysia, over concerns about forced labour regulations.
Malaysia is subject to the lower 10% tariff, effective today, under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, while countries such as China face a 12.5% rate.
The US said the measures aim to encourage stronger enforcement against goods produced with forced labour.
Several products, including crude and refined palm oil, gemstones and goods already covered by sector-specific tariffs, are exempt from the new duties.
