PUTRAJAYA, July 31 — Malaysia’s domestic tourism sector recorded its strongest performance in 2025, with 290.1 million domestic visitors making 332.2 million trips nationwide.

Generating RM121.3 billion in tourism expenditure, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). Tourism spending increased 13.6% from 2024.

While visitor arrivals and trips grew 11.5% and 11.4%, respectively. Shopping accounted for the largest share of expenditure at 36.9%, followed by food and beverages, fuel and accommodation.

Visiting relatives and friends remained the main travel purpose, while Pahang emerged as Malaysia’s most visited domestic tourism destination.

The accommodation sector also recorded stronger performance, with Malaysia’s average hotel occupancy rate rising to 56.8%, supported by 104.35 million hotel guests throughout 2025. 

Genting Highlands recorded the country’s highest hotel occupancy at 97.0%, reflecting continued growth across the tourism and hospitality industry.
