GEORGE TOWN, August 2 — George Town Festival (GTF) 2026 officially opened tonight at Padang Kota Lama, marking the start of its 17th edition with more than 40 programmes taking place across Penang.
From Aug 1 to 9 under the theme “Beyond Boundaries.” Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state is targeting 200,000 visitors, double last year’s attendance.
With the festival expected to boost tourism, support local businesses and strengthen Penang’s position as a leading cultural destination in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026.
He said the state will continue improving tourism infrastructure, connectivity and public spaces while promoting high-value tourism that benefits the local economy.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the festival showcases Penang’s rich creative ecosystem.
Through visual arts, theatre, music, dance, workshops, films and public installations. He added that this year’s edition features collaborations with international partners.
From Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea and Singapore, reinforcing George Town Festival’s role as a platform for cultural exchange and artistic innovation.
