KUALA LUMPUR, August 4 — The government is finalising amendments to the Rail Transport Act to increase the maximum fine for railway cable theft and trespassing from RM1,000 to RM100,000.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah said the proposal is expected to be tabled in the next Parliament sitting.
The move follows an increase in cable theft cases that have caused an estimated RM50 million in losses involving KTMB, Prasarana Malaysia and the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL).
The government is also installing 1,146 CCTV cameras, while KTMB has strengthened security with 24-hour patrols, K9 units and scrambler motorcycles.
