GEORGE TOWN, August 10 — Root rot and severe trunk cavity decay contributed to the collapse of a 90-year-old Angsana tree along Jalan Macalister, according to the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).
Mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said the 28-metre tree had about 30% root rot and 40% cavity decay at its base, compounded by soil compaction and restricted rooting space.
An elderly couple and their grandchild were injured when the tree crushed their Perodua Ativa. No heavy rain or strong winds were reported.
MBPP has since ordered accelerated work to reduce tree heights and remove trees identified as potential collapse risks.
