GEORGE TOWN, August 11 — George Town Festival 2026 (GTF 2026) concluded today after nine days of arts, cultural and community programmes across Penang, attracting more than 200,000 visitors throughout the festival.
The closing weekend was headlined by CTRL A+C (Control Arts and the City), which transformed George Town’s streets, parks and public spaces into stages for unexpected artistic encounters and audience participation.
At Armenian Street, Italy’s Shedan Theater presented Steamplant Movement, a non-verbal street performance following six survivors searching for hope in a post-apocalyptic world.
Italian theatre company Instabili Vaganti presented Beyond Borders, bringing Malaysian and international artists together to explore migration, identity, belonging and the boundaries connecting communities.
South Korea was represented by Lumos Theatre’s Click Click, combining magic, masks and physical comedy, while Baek.S.Factory’s FENCE explored family relationships, emotional distance and healing.
Singapore-based Off Root Theatrics presented Nenda: Fruit in Palm, examining humanity’s relationship with the natural environment through movement, ritual and live sound.
Malaysia’s Sekolah Main Wayang also staged Los | Kembali, developed with Indigenous Semai youths from Perak and combining shadow puppetry, masks, movement and live music.
