KUALA LUMPUR, August 15 — The government is considering imposing a levy on every electric vehicle (EV) sold to fund the expansion of Malaysia’s public charging network. 

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Ghani said the move is being studied as public charging infrastructure has not grown as expected.

Despite four years of tax incentives for imported EVs. Johari said the government has forgone RM3.3 billion in tax revenue through EV incentives and will continue supporting the industry.

By retaining tax exemptions for CKD EVs until Dec 31, 2027, while requiring investors to strengthen local vendor participation and technology transfer.
