GEORGE TOWN, September 4 — The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) has urged the government to study regulated balcony solar systems as a more accessible renewable energy option for households.
CAP said apartment residents, tenants and consumers without suitable roof space are often unable to benefit from conventional rooftop solar.
The group cited Germany’s adoption of plug-in balcony solar as a model Malaysia could examine. CAP said any programme should prioritise household self-generation.
While establishing clear rules covering certified equipment, electrical safety, strata properties, smart metering and surplus electricity supplied to the grid.
It called on energy authorities and electricity providers to conduct a feasibility study.
