GEORGE TOWN, September 5 — Six premises were damaged in an early-morning fire near Chew Jetty, but the heritage waterfront settlement itself was unaffected, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said Saturday.
Chow said the fire, reported at about 1am, involved workshops and woodworking premises located about 20 metres from Chew Jetty.
Fire and Rescue Department personnel, assisted by volunteer firefighters, brought the blaze under control. No deaths or injuries were reported.
Chow said contractors would remove remaining timber to allow firefighters to complete operations. The affected premises are on state land.
And the state government will assist occupants with the process should they seek to rebuild.
