KULAI, September 6 — Social media platforms should introduce stronger safeguards for underage users worldwide to address internet addiction and online safety risks.
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said Saturday. Teo said protections planned for Facebook and Instagram users under 18 should not be limited to the United States.
She cited measures including two-hour daily usage limits, restricted access between midnight and 6am, improved age verification and changes to features encouraging prolonged use.
Teo said similar safeguards should be adopted across other major social media platforms, including TikTok, YouTube and Snapchat.
She added that platforms in Malaysia remain within a grace period to implement restrictions involving underage users.
